For all of the Viking Graduates! William Marion Raines Senior High School is the longest serving historically black high school predominately serving students of color in Jacksonville. The historic institution was named for Professor William Marion Raines, a prominent and very respected educator in Jacksonville. He was principal for Matthew Gilbert Senior-Junior High School for 12 years. His educational background included studying at Florida Memorial College, Edward Waters College, Florida A & M University, Hampton Institute and Columbia University. He was known to be a christian gentleman and a mentor to the African American youth of Jacksonville. His community affiliation included serving as a sunday school teacher at historic Bethel Baptist Institutional Church for over 20 years. Detailed Information In 1964 the costume of education was to separate the races. So when the North-side of Jacksonville’s African American population started to increase the Duval County School Board had to decide where to educate its youth. The board decided to send them to Jean Ribault High School but the all white faculty and students rejected the idea of the board admitting black students. The school board then decided to build less than a mile from Ribault, a new, state of the art facility that cost 2 million dollars. School No. 165 opened its doors at 3663 Clarkson Avenue, on January 24, 1965 with a flourish. At the end of the 1965 Spring Semester the Duval County School Board approved the school name William Marion Raines Senior High School. From then until today the school has been a leader in education. The “2 Million Dollar School” as it was called in 1965, was led by Dr. Andrew A. Robinson for the first four years of its existence. The colors cardinal red and silver gray was chosen as the school colors and the Viking was chosen as the school’s mascot. Raines remained and all African American school until the government mandated desegregation in 1970. The following year after the court order, the faculty was integrated and another year later the student body was integrated. Raines was originally accredited in 1968, the first school in Duval County to achieve accreditation. Raines was re-accredited in 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008 and was given glowing compliments from the visiting boards. Raines has been under the leadership of 12 principals: Dr. Andrew A. Robinson (Founding Principal 1965-1969), Dr. Ezekial W. Bryant (1969-1972), Mr. Kernaa McFarlin (1972-1978), Mr. Ike James (1978-1979), Mr. Jimmie Johnson (longest serving principal 1979-1995), Mr. Milton H. Threadcraft (1995-1997), Dr. Roy I. Mitchell (1997-2002), Mrs. Carol H. Daniels (2002-2006) and Mrs. Nongongoma Majova-Seane (2006-2009), Mr. George E. Maxey (2009-2011), Ms. Shateena Brown (2012-2013), Vincent Hall (2013-Present). Vincent Hall is the first graduate of Raines to serve as principal.
